  • Who are potential RISE Scholars?
Potential RISE Scholars are either North Korean-born refugees or children of North Korean born refugees who are resettled in the U.S. and enrolled/enrolling in a college, graduate school or vocational program for the award year of their application. RISE Scholars are chosen on a variety of factors, including academic performance, financial need, personal vision and vocational aspirations, community service, leadership skills, and outstanding circumstances. Donations made to charity fundraisers in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland and Australia are considered tax-deductible. All donations made to our website are tax deductible. If you would like to receive a tax deductible report, please be sure to include your e-mail address and/or mailing address within your donation.
  • How many students can I support?
You may support as many students as you wish. If you would like to support a specific student, please be sure to give directly to their profile page on GiveButter. You can view all the RISE Scholar profiles with a link to their GiveButter site here:
  • How are donations made through the GiveButter site used?
Additional support raised using the RISE Scholar’s GiveButter platform will be directed to the Scholar’s account for education-related and living expenses. Scholars are encouraged to maintain a basic budget/expense record, and account for expenses during the reevaluation process should they wish to continue with the RISE Scholars program.
  • If I do not specify a student, how can I support the RISE Scholars program?
If you wish to support the RISE Scholars program, which includes maintaining the program and funding the $1,000 scholarship per Scholar, please visit and select “RISE Scholars” so that your gift can support the areas of greatest need for this program.
  • If I donate through GiveButter will I get a tax deduction through PSALT?
Yes! Donating through GiveButter is still a donation to PSALT. Since PSALT is a verified 501(c)(3) non-profit at GiveButter, you will receive an automatic receipt including our EIN and your transaction summary upon donating through GiveButter. You will also receive a donation receipt at the end of the giving year reflecting the total amount of your donations to PSALT. For donor information please visit:
  • Are donations to PSALT NK tax deductible?
Yes! PSALT NK (or PSALT) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit charity organization powered by your generous support. All contributions are tax-deductible. Tax ID: 03-0593240
  • Can I share the GiveButter and RISE Scholars profile pages?
Yes! We work with RISE Scholars to ensure they are comfortable with the information they provide on their profile pages. We encourage supporters to share these pages with friends, family, communities, churches, and other networks to help support the Scholars and to become a part of the continuing journeys and dreams of the North Korean refugees.
  • What is the duration of the RISE Scholars award?
RISE Scholars are selected in June, in preparation for the school year ahead. The scholarship period is one year from the date of selection. Scholarships are not automatically renewed, but the Scholar who wishes to continue will be considered for subsequent awards per reevaluation requirements – including evidence of continued enrollment, continued interest, and other relevant documentation. The GiveButter page will remain open for as long as the Scholar continues with the program. Donors are encouraged to support and check in for updates on the Scholar’s profile pages.
  • Why is RISE Scholars both a scholarship award and crowd-funding campaign?
We want to go beyond the $1,000 scholarship amount and grow the potential size of each Scholar’s award by inviting the community to invest in their journey. We believe the process of safely sharing the Scholar’s story will increase awareness about the North Korean refugees resettlement experience and invite the larger community to support them with prayer, encouragement, and financial support. We hope this program will help them develop a sense of agency and empowerment, as well as experience the blessing of community support and accountability.
